Cool Compounding

What Is Cool Compounding?

Cool compounding is the process of taking a neat, general-purpose thermoplastic and mechanically blending it with color or additive masterbatch pellets. The common term for this process is “salt and pepper.” Plastics Plus has three strategically located blending facilities in the US: Shelby Township, Michigan; El Paso, Texas; and Charlotte, NC.

If we don’t have a facility near you call us to discuss how we can support your needs locally, perhaps even in your own plant.

What Are the Advantages Of Cool Compounding?

Speed of delivery, inventory elimination, and lower risk of obsolete inventory. Unlike most pre-colored resins, cool compounded blends provide the customer the flexibility to order the amount of material they want when they need it. There are no minimum quantity requirements, resulting in expensive inventory carrying costs and obsolescence risk. In addition, using cool compounded blends from Plastics Plus greatly reduces or eliminates long lead times by maintaining inventory in their lowest-cost reusable forms – natural resin and masterbatch.

While most commonly done in colors, the same process can be applied to the following additive masterbatches:

  •  Antimicrobials
  • Chemical Foaming Agents
  • Process Aids/Scrap reduction
  • Cycle Reduction Aids
  • Anti-Stat/Conductive
  • Mineral Fillers
  • UV & Thermal Stabilization
  • Anti-Oxidants
  • Flame Retardants
  • Fastmark™ Laser Marking
  • Thermochromic Colorants
  • Mold Release Agents
  • Lubricants/Slip
  • Optical Brighteners/NiteBrite™
  • Renewable/Bio Resin Additives
  • Hydrophobic/Hydrophilic
  • Odor Absorption and Fragrances
  • Adhesion Promoters
  • Security/Authentication
